Brand You Personal Branding

Episode 300 is a solo show about why you should consider rebranding, why you shouldn’t, and some personal reflections on the Brand You podcast -- and all that I’ve experienced and learned since starting the show in 2014. Believe it or not, the podcast was named Up and to the Right for about 6 months before I did my first podcast rebrand.

There are two reasons to rebrand:

  1. If people don’t understand who you are and what you do
  2. If you’re attracting the wrong customer

Up and to the Right was not attracting my ideal audience. But when I changed the name to Brand You, the podcast took off. It was clear what the purpose of the podcast was and who should listen.

In this episode, we go over how to tell if your product, service, or podcast needs a facelift, an overhaul, or a funeral. We also go over what to do if you are multi-passionate and how to stack all your passions so that you can pull from each one.

The Brand You podcast will be taking a month off and returning in October as You are the Brand. Thank you for your support over the past 300 episodes and I look forward to the next 300!

In this episode, my friend Marc Pitman shares how to use uncertainty to become the leader you want to be. Marc and I met at a Love 146 event years ago. As a reminder, Love 146 is a nonprofit I support that provides care for children who have been trafficked and the sales from my book are going to the cause.

Marc’s most recent book The Surprising Gift of Doubt is for the high-performing leader. We discuss if feelings of doubt and insecurity ever go away and how to manage them, the enneagram and how it ties into feelings of doubt in your work, and Marc’s emphasis on nonprofits and how they can help you in your leadership development.

The 4 Quadrants of Leadership:

  1. Have a lot of confidence to complete a task because they have watched others do it so they copy them -- but their confidence drops when they find that they are not as successful as the person they copied.
  2. Feel like they are faking their success and always trying to “fix” a problem although they aren’t sure what it is or how to fix it.
  3. Learn to grow in their unique identity and do what works best for them so their confidence increases.
  4. Help others increase their confidence by “focus leading.”

3 Competencies that Everyone Has:

  1. Hardwiring (personality or cognitive)
  2. Stories (the way we are programmed)
  3. Goal Setting (the way we handle goals)

Andy Storch is a performance coach, speaker, consultant, and the author of the new book, Own Your Career, Own Your Life. He is the host of not one, but two podcasts and the founder and host of the Talent Development Think Tank conference. Andy has unfortunately been battling cancer but you would never know it because he always has a smile on his face and an infectious, never-quit attitude.

Andy has been on the show before but this time we discussed his creative process for writing his book and what owning your career means. Here’s a hint -- you don’t have to leave your nine-to-five to live a happy and fulfilled life! This book is meant to help people map out a career and live with intention.

We discussed the book writing process, how to create new corporate learning opportunities, and what feedback culture is. We also go into:

  • The idea behind his book, who it’s for, and why you should wait to write a book until you are more established in your business.
  • The mistakes people make when they take a job because it pays well or is convenient, rather than working at a job that fits into their goals.
  • How to get new skills and perfect the skills that you have by practicing and getting critical feedback from your peers.

John Meese is a serial entrepreneur and author of the newly released book, Survive and Thrive. You can have three perspectives in the world: the historian who is focused on the past, the reporter who focuses on the now, and the futurist who looks toward the future and tries to predict what will happen. John is without a doubt a futurist.

In this episode, we have a good conversation about where he sees things going (especially post-pandemic) for all businesses. He relates the shutdown to 9/11 because things will never be the same as they were before. We have new insights -- which is information through the filter of experience, and new problems that need to be solved.

Listen in as we discuss:

  • The three crises that were happening during the shutdown: health, mental health, and economic -- and how John coulld help with the economic crisis.
  • Creating real solutions to real problems for real people.
  • The shift from the age of information to the age of insight.

In this episode, I flesh out these five principles that have kept me sane during the insanely busy season that was my book launch!

  1. Don’t let your mouth overload your back.

  2. Play the game that plays to your strengths.

  3. Talent doesn’t replace the need for hard work, it clarifies it.

  4. You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.

  5. The last mile is always the least run.

  6. BONUS: Train through the injury.

I gleaned these principles from various sources including motivational videos on YouTube from Jim Rohn, David Goggins, and Athlean X, and James Clear's book Atomic Habits.

After learning I wrote a book, my nephew said he wanted to write one, too. That melted me so of course, I had to have him do the opening to this episode!

I don’t have kids but they‘ve always been close to my heart. Several years ago I went on a partner trip with Rob Morris of Love146, an organization that helps children rescued from trafficking.

Rob is an incredible storyteller and he uses this skill to literally change lives. There are some incredible insights in this interview, and I hope you'll listen with an open mind and heart.

To support Love 146: love146.org

Through my career, the only times I’ve ever truly wished for a bigger platform were times I wish I had more money or influence to help causes like Love146.

The internet marketing / personal development / coaching space can do a lot better than wax poetic about 7-figure launches, “epic” masterminds, and speaking in front of big crowds.

I’m all for entrepreneurs enjoying their success but I would also posit to my colleagues to consider using our platforms to help real world causes that go beyond our bank accounts and lifestyle business.

Then maybe we can inspire more kids to write their own books, no matter where they’re from. Yes?

As I complete yet another trip around the sun, I wanted to share a few things I've been doing to stay sharp, push my productivity, and process many of the things going on in the business.

One of the big things I'm working through is how we as human beings can navigate the fear of success. So much of the time we think fear of failure is what will cripple us, but I'm starting to think there's a flip side to that coin.

In this episode you'll hear some terrific insights from several of my friends as they've helped me navigate this new season. I want to give a particular shoutout to Loren TrlinKristina Hoyer, and Lauren Davis for their contributions.

You'll also hear a bit about my morning routine, and you can watch a short Instagram video of it here.

Truthfully, I haven't paid much attention to SEO (search engine optimization) over the years. My thinking was that my site would never get enough traffic to really warrant playing the SEO game. I could not have been more wrong.

Robby Fowler joins me today and together we are going to unpack how we are trying to fix my SEO. The bottom line is that Google doesn't know which "Mike Kim" I am, and when Google is confused then I put myself in a position to confuse people who search for me.

Tune in and you'll learn:

  1. Why you must think of yourself as an "entity" rather than just one site or person on the internet

  2. The surprising reason why I need to delete old blog posts from my site (even top-performing ones)

  3. Why I setup a "Google My Business" location-based account even though I am a digital nomad

  4. How I screwed up my blog categories on my site all these years (and what I'm doing to fix it)

  5. Why you should pay MORE attention to SEO if you have a smaller following, and not the other way around

Shownotes: mikekim.com/byp289

Building a book launch team is generally a good idea for a few reasons. You want folks who have read the book before the title releases, so that you can get reviews.

If people enjoy the book, they can help spread the word about it once it releases. You can also get legit feedback on which parts of the book resonated with readers, which you can turn around and use in your marketing.

Tune in and you’ll also get the inside scoop on the process I used to get people on the team, why social media didn’t work as well to recruit launch team members, and what I plan to do to maintain “energy” among members in the book launch team between now and the launch date.

It was an incredible feeling to finally hold my book in my hands, and in today's episode I share a recording I made just minutes after receiving my shipment of books. I hope it inspires you to keep going, no matter what endeavor you are on.

One of the new endeavors I'm on is YouTube, and I am 100% committed to being strategic and intentional on this channel for five reasons:

  1. Lazy re-purposing of content does not work in today's world
  2. I want to be "searchable" and YouTube is the best way to make that happen.
  3. I want to be THE Mike Kim online, but I'm not the only one.
  4. I want to express myself in new ways and create a new channel.
  5. Seeing myself on YouTube elevates how I see myself.

This is an important conversation not just for books but for data-driven marketing overall. You'll also hear how Phillip did some things that DON'T scale in order to overcome the ban by Facebook and still launch his book to great success.

Tune in for a behind-the-scenes look at how I'm crafting the various offers for the book launch, including pre-order bonuses as well as "Coaching + Books" special bundles I'm offering just during this launch.

The guiding principle behind how I craft offers is to make it so "killer" that it would be crazy NOT to do buy in. I also believe strongly in what Derek Halpern calls "The Bonus Sandwich", which allows me to stack the main offer with irresistible bonuses.

A special thanks to Julia Bocchese for helping me connect with some mainstream media outlets in Philadelphia!

He models this by being a consistent creative himself—Mike sketches almost every day by stealing time in the ordinary moments of life. Josh Finley is my longtime friend and one of the wisest people I know. We meet when we were teenagers, but our paths continued to cross throughout young adulthood. Like me, Josh has been involved in ministry and made some significant shifts in his career over the years. I invited him to come onto the show this week to talk about spiritual things. I really wanted to take a breather from the intense interviews we’ve been having and just have a conversation with this great friend. Josh is one of the best communicators and leaders there are, so you’ll love our discussion. In it, we talk about:

  1. Relationships that survive the test of time
  2. Reflecting back on life
  3. Feeling like you’re falling behind in life
  4. How Josh has redefined some terms and gotten more comfortable with tension
  5. Identifying and unpacking our brokenness
  6. What real authenticity looks like

Today, I am bringing my good friend Ray Edwards back onto the show. He just released his new book, Permission to Prosper. The book is all about money, self-worth, and why it’s okay to do well. It’s about time those of us who are building businesses fixed our mindset around the issue of wealth. As Ray says, not only do we have permission to prosper, but a mandate to multiply.

Ray also taught me that an abundance of money won’t fix a poverty of spirit. If you think you live with a poverty mindset, tune in to our amazing conversation where talk about:

  1. How he went about writing Permission to Prosper
  2. The mindset shifts he had to make when money started coming in
  3. Changing our understanding of wealth at an atomic level
  4. Wealth and self-worth
  5. What Ray’s book is all about
  6. Accepting generosity from others
  7. Why equal distribution of wealth helps no one
  8. Making our lives more valuable in the automation age

I believe that confident communication is a skill anyone can learn. I was a quiet kid, but I’ve learned over the years that, in a sense, every interaction is a performance. Though others may be naturals on the stage, success rarely comes from ability alone.

That is exactly why I love the work Michael and Amy Porter do so much. They are a powerhouse couple who run a training company in New Jersey called Heroic Public Speaking. I spent some time training there and the things I learned transformed my craft of speaking. Michael and Amy are a treasure trove when it comes to the business and art of speaking. They put me on a path to want to become the best communicator I can be. Tune in to hear their amazing expertise on:

  1. Where the speaking industry is headed
  2. Zoom fatigue
  3. Stage-side leads
  4. Why rehearsal is so transformative and important
  5. The balance between content and performance
  6. The 3 different types of speaking opportunities
  7. How to transfer from breakouts to keynotes
  8. How to inspire an audience

Life is short, but it’s the longest thing we’ll ever do. I say that all the time and today’s guest has proved with his life that he believes it. Aaron Walker is the founder of Iron Sharpens Iron Mastermind, author of the book View From The Top, and creator of The Mastermind Playbook. At the beginning of his career, he built and sold multiple brick and mortar businesses and retired by the age of 27. Now he works because he wants to, spending his time teaching entrepreneurs how to do what he has done.

One of the biggest things I admire about and have learned from Aaron is his process of doing the same thing over and over again. He has rinsed and repeated with every company he’s built. This focus got him to where he is today. In this episode, Aaron is talking to us about that process as well as how he’s used masterminds to grow his business and develop his life. Throughout the show you’ll hear:

  1. A bit of Aaron’s story, including his struggles
  2. Why he’s done 2500 podcast interviews in the last 6 and a half years
  3. His core values
  4. His unique process for setting goals and planning ahead
  5. All about The Mastermind Playbook
  6. Why he has focused on masterminds
  7. How you can make a 6-figure income by investing just 2 hours of your time each week
